Job Summary:

Make a visible impact in Largo’s beautiful outdoor spaces! Are you passionate about plant health and maintaining vibrant landscapes? Join our Parks team as a Spray Technician, where you’ll play a key role in protecting and enhancing the City’s green spaces. This hands-on position involves both technical and manual work applying chemical treatments to control plant pests and diseases across parks, rights-of-way, and public landscapes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
What You’ll Do:

Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers following safety and environmental guidelines Identify plant pests, diseases, and treatment needs Assist with landscape maintenance and integrated pest management practices Work independently after training, with support from the Horticulture Technician and Supervisor Help ensure Largo remains a beautiful, thriving community for all residents and visitors

Minimum Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership Demonstrates an understanding and reflection of the City’s mission, vision, and values and a commitment to achieve organizational goals aligned with the City’s strategic plan Champions a high-performance work culture that encourages and embraces new ideas, develops individuals and welcomes and encourages diverse perspectives Articulates strategic and innovative thinking and provides clarity to deliver superior services Approaches the job with enthusiasm and curiosity to promote a solutions-oriented work culture Management Effectively manages assignments and priorities to ensure the fulfillment of projects, tasks, and responsibilities Follows suggested procedures to ensure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety, and risk avoidance Technical Applies herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide chemicals by power pressure or hand spraying and dusting in the control of diseases, insects, and injuries to various species of plants located in City parks, parkways, rights of way, nurseries, and lawns Mixes chemicals by prescribed procedures; fills spray units and transports equipment to designated work sites; opens valves, adjusts sprayer nozzles, and directs spray over areas to be treated Maintains spray and associated equipment cleanly and safely, including calibrating spray units Inspects and maintains natural conveyances Acts as a troubleshooter for plant and tree diseases and recommends solutions Observes safety precautions in the preparation, application, and storage of chemicals per supervisory instructions Prepares and maintains records and reports of areas treated, amounts of chemicals used, and dates applied Orders chemicals and fertilizers as needed Team Skills Supports honest and transparent decision-making Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments Openly exhibits a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourages others to do the same Performs related work as required.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS

As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

Valid Florida Driver’s License Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of methods and equipment utilized in the application of chemicals or sprays to control plant pests and disease Knowledge of the hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in chemical spray work and willingness to observe same at all times Knowledge of the use and care of spray equipment Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:

10% inside a climate-controlled building and 90% outside, which may include driving.

Physical Requirements:

The essential functions of the job require sitting approximately one (1) hour per day, standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately three (3) hours per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds, lifting/carrying of objects weighing 15 to 44 pounds, and lifting/carrying of objects weighing 45 pounds and over.

Sensory Requirements:
Hearing:

Ability to understand what others are saying in normal conversation in person and on the telephone and hear the operation of airboats and other construction equipment.

Speaking:

Ability to communicate orally with others in person and on the phone.

Seeing:

Ability to operate trucks, trailers, and airboats.

Driving Requirements:

The work requires frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Class “D” Driver’s License.

Technology:

The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software. It also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, internet applications, and database management.

The work requires the ability to operate flatbed trucks and spray machines.
