Part-Time Position Overview The Herbicide Applicator is responsible for the safe and efficient application of herbicides and related chemical treatments to manage vegetation along parish roads, drainage ditches, rights-of-way, and other assigned areas throughout Jefferson Davis Parish. The position supports the maintenance and safety of public infrastructure and is performed under the direction of the Road Supervisor, in compliance with all applicable regulations. Key Responsibilities Herbicide Application and Equipment Operation Mix, load, and apply herbicides in accordance with label instructions and applicable laws. Operate equipment such as boom sprayers, backpack sprayers, truck-mounted units, and ATVs. Perform pre-treatment inspections to assess vegetation types and potential site hazards. Monitor environmental conditions (e.g., wind, temperature, rainfall) to determine optimal application timing. Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on spraying equipment to ensure effectiveness and safety. Documentation and Safety Compliance Maintain detailed records of all chemical applications, including herbicide types, quantities, and treatment locations. Follow safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and chemical handling procedures. Ensure safe storage, transport, and disposal of herbicides and related materials. Report equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or incidents immediately to the supervisor. Support Duties and Team Collaboration Assist with inventory management of herbicides, PPE, and application tools. Participate in mandatory safety training and certification programs. Communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers regarding job status, safety updates, or logistical needs. Perform other maintenance or field duties as assigned by the Road Supervisor. Additional Duties Transport equipment and materials to and from job sites using parish vehicles. Assist with the maintenance of parish yards and facilities as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the Area Road Foreman or Road Administrator.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements Education:

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Experience:

Prior experience applying herbicides or pesticides preferred but not required; on-the-job training available.

Licenses/Certifications:

Must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license with a clean driving record. Must possess or be willing to obtain a Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification within six (6) months of hire (if required).

Other:

Must be at least 18 years old and eligible to work in the United States. Desired Skills and Attribute Knowledge of herbicide application procedures and relevant safety practices. Ability to interpret product labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS). Skill in operating and maintaining herbicide application equipment. Attention to detail in both application and documentation. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Physical stamina to lift up to 50 pounds and work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain. Work Environment Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and wind. Regular exposure to herbicides, chemical fumes, insects, and rugged terrain. Moderate physical exertion required, including walking, bending, lifting, and equipment operation. Work Hours Part-time schedule, typically 20-30 hours per week. Hours may vary by season and operational need. Early morning shifts or occasional weekend work may be required during peak vegetation seasons. Compensation Hourly rate based on qualifications and experience.
