Non-Exempt Job Description:
This role will be responsible for the spray and granular applications made to the City’s park spaces, athletic fields, and historic garden spaces,
Examples of Duties:
Makes regular spray and granular applications to and within the City’s park spaces. Designs programs which encourage proper growth of turf and ornamentals and maintains their health and quality. Operates a variety of hand-held manual, electrical and gas-powered tools, devices and equipment used in making chemical applications and operates motorized equipment such as a boom sprayer and skid steer loader as needed. Reads and follows pesticide labels and safety data sheets to ensure proper timing of all applications with regards to effectiveness and safety of the environment and visitors/patrons at all City locations. Inspects turf and ornamental spaces installed by private contractors on City property and facilities and makes recommendations for needed treatments and overall health and vigor of spaces being maintained by contractors or being turned over to the City. Prepares reports and maintains detailed and accurate written records of all spray and granular applications made at any City location. Ensures proper calibration of and performs preventive maintenance on tools/equipment according to assigned schedules or when directed. Works closely with supervisors and Irrigation Technician to develop best practices/culture to promote improved turf and ornamental quality/health, minimize un-needed chemical applications, and help any application be the most successful. Works with staff to develop cultural practices to minimize un-needed chemical applications and ensure application success. Regularly supervises small groups to complete work as assigned, teaching and helping other grounds maintenance staff to make small applications on their own in a safe and complete manner. Responds to emergency situations as needed. Performs any other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
1 year of experience in the application of chemicals and fertilizers and the maintenance of higher level turf and ornamentals, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid driver’s license. SC Pesticide License (Commercial or Non-Commercial). Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Experience with centralized irrigation control systems helpful.
Other Necessary Requirements:
May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City’s needs.
