Description
Under general supervision of a Lieutenant, Sanibel Rangers are responsible for patrolling all Sanibel beaches, parks, preserves, boat ramp, and shared use paths in a safe manner, enforcing park regulations involving the prevention, detection and investigation of city ordinance violations. Position will report and/or correct any safety issues that may arise while on patrol on foot, bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, boat, and/or ranger patrol vehicle. Sanibel Rangers may also supervise volunteers and communicate with the public regarding recreational opportunities, park use, ecosystems and wildlife education and provide impromptu interpretation for patrons while in the field.
Duties
Conducts daily scheduled patrols of Sanibel beaches, parks, preserves, boat ramp, and shared use paths to promote safety and security for visitors and employees.
Enforces Sanibel municipal park ordinances.
Writes incident reports on activities or actions taken.
Reports and documents safety concerns for repairs needed or to report any unsafe conditions of grounds, equipment, buildings, boardwalks, shared use paths, etc. to
Superintendent of Parks and Beaches and Risk Management.
Performs systematic enforcement of boat trailer parking facilities at Sanibel Boat Ramp and issues warning or citations.
Provides park visitors with information, directions, rule interpretations and activities that are available.
Supports local, state and federal agencies in the parks, including Sanibel Fire and Rescue District, Lee County Sheriff, and Florida Wildlife Commission.
Operates assigned ranger patrol vehicle in a safe and legal manner, even under adverse conditions, in the performance of assigned duties and tasks.
Directs traffic at congested park locations or for special events.
Performs daily inspections, maintains patrol vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation and cleanliness.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Required Education, Experience, License, Registration, and Certification Qualifications
High school diploma; and
Associate’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Environmental Studies, Tourism and Hospitality, Criminal Justice or a similar related field.
Three (3) years’ experience as a municipal park ranger or in a related field such as code enforcement, law enforcement, conservation officer, security or military police.
Equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience will be considered.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire or promotion. Must successfully complete assigned ranger certification courses and trainings within six months of hire or promotion.
First Aid, AED and CPR certification required, or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of hire or promotion.
The preferred candidate will have Florida Association of Code Enforcement (F.A.C.E.) certification in the Fundamentals of Code Enforcement or Officer Safety and Field Applications

Sanibel Rangers work independently and will be required to work weekends and holidays. Rangers will be assigned to various areas within the city during their assigned shifts. Rangers may be required to operate an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), or ride a bicycle in addition to driving a city vehicle to carry out duties. Rangers must act within the authority granted in Florida State Statute 162.21 and by the departmental policies, procedures and ordinances. Must be able to utilize good judgment while enforcing City park ordinances as non-sworn, unarmed, uniformed personnel. Refer to law enforcement officials in any situation that may exceed the Sanibel Ranger’s scope of duties. Supplemental or Additional Information
Knowledge of Florida state laws and statutes or the means by which to access such.
Knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and practices.
Knowledge of business English, the application of such to a variety of formats, styles, and editing principles and techniques.
Knowledge of occupational hazards, personal protective equipment required, and safety precautions of the assigned work.
Skilled in the efficient and safe operation of tools and equipment used in performing job functions.
Skilled oral and written communications for effective expression, issuing and receiving instructions, clarity in task assignment, and in the interest of public relations.
Skilled in the use of modern office equipment and various computer programs and applications, to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Organization, attention to detail, listening, prioritization, and time management.
Ability to learn citywide administrative regulations; applicable citywide departmental policies; and park ordinances, criminal justice processes, department computer systems and applications associated with job functions.
Ability to perform work in all weather conditions.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interact in a positive, professional manner with fellow staff, city vendors, and the public.
Ability to wear safety and personal protection equipment.
