Description St. Louis County Park Rangers provide services to the community by providing programming, protection, and public relations to visitors of the County parks system. We are currently accepting applications and will establish an eligible list to fill current and future full time and on call vacancies. Applications received are valid for six months after the date of submission. If you are not notified within six months, you will need to reapply. These positions work day and evening shifts including weekends and holidays. On call rangers work a foreseeable schedule providing coverage to scheduling as needed and the number of hours worked will vary based on the candidate’s availability and the department’s scheduling needs. The starting salary for both full time and on call positions will be $18.77 hourly. There are no benefits provided with on call positions. Examples of Duties Researches, develops, plans, and presents recreation programs to educate park visitors and the general public.
Develops promotional plans for events and programs including writing and distributing flyers and brochures.
Plans, organizes, promotes, and supervises special programs that are conducted on an annual or periodic basis such as Educational Outreach Programs, Firearms Safety, and Classroom and Field Trip presentations for schools or groups.
Patrols park sites on foot, bike, or by vehicle to observe and take corrective action in the event of ordinance violations and unsafe conditions.
Regulates vehicle traffic flow and provides crowd control to enforce traffic laws and prevent traffic accidents or injuries.
Applies for warrants and, when required, issues citations to individuals in violation of ordinances or rules governing the park to ensure the safety and security of the park, its natural resources, and visitors.
Detains violators of laws and ordinances, within the park rangers jurisdiction, to control unlawful or illicit acts that may harm park visitors and damage or destroy County property.
Inspects, cleans, repairs, and maintains equipment, personal weapons, and gear to assure reliability, safe operation, and long term use.
Prepares written reports regarding security related park incidents to provide a permanent record for future reference.
Assists park visitors by answering questions about the park and its attractions to facilitate park usage and enhance visitor’s experience.
Administers first aid in the treatment of minor injuries or provides other assistance to park visitors in medical or other emergencies and initiates corrective action to control crisis situations.
Conducts preliminary investigations and prepares routine reports to provide information necessary for documentation or further actions such as prosecution.
Functions as Radio Dispatcher when needed to provide adequate coverage for the department’s two-way radio system.
Performs related work as required.

EQUIPMENT USED

 Firearms, handcuffs, ASP baton, flashlight, portable two-way radio, patrol vehicle, pepper spray, first aid kit, utility tools, emergency equipment, binoculars, citation book, bicycle, and all terrain vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS

 Sitting and standing for long periods, working in extreme weather/environmental conditions, driving for long periods, exposure to aggressive persons during conflict management situations, animals and pest control situations, and lifting and hauling heavy materials. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s Degree in Parks Administration, Recreation, Criminal Justice, POST Certification, a natural science, or a related field and two years of related experience preferably including some responsible related experience involving problem resolution such as recreation or public safety service; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. In addition, they must be at least 21 years of age and qualify for a Park Ranger license issued by the St. Louis County Police Department. Background requirements to qualify for licensure as a Park Ranger include the following: No felony convictions. No assault, stealing or offenses involving moral turpitude convictions within the past thirty-six (36) months. Have not plead guilty or been convicted of any Domestic Violence related crime or currently listed as a respondent in an Order of Protection. No active warrant or wanted requests and not on active probation for any offenses, including Suspended Imposition of Sentence (SIS). SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT

A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant’s education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
