Description of Work Internal Posting – Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time, temporary part-time, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply. This position is in the Gaston County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Gaston County. On a regular and recurring basis, employee operates at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe footwear is needed for this position. Employee must be able to operate medium dump truck safely. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment, hand & power tools, & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Employee must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain. Employee must have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
