Summary The Asphalt Laborer works as part of a paving crew to complete asphalt paving projects by raking, shoveling, and tamping asphalt. This role is critical to ensuring the proper finish, smoothness, and overall quality of the final paved surface while maintaining a safe and efficient worksite. There is an exellent opportunity to make prevailing wage rates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Rakes, shovels, and tamps asphalt material to assist in the completion of paving projects. Communicates clearly and effectively with equipment operators, truck drivers, and fellow laborers to coordinate tasks and ensure safety. Cleans tools and equipment after use to maintain functionality and safety. Inspects tools daily, identifying and replacing damaged or broken tools as needed. Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area to prevent accidents and promote efficiency. Performs other related duties as assigned to support paving operations. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities): High school diploma or equivalent required. OSHA 10-Hour Certification is required. Previous construction or paving experience is preferred but not required. Reliable transportation is required; a valid driver’s license is necessary for occasional travel between job sites. Knowledge of and ability to safely use hand tools including rakes, shovels, tampers, and radios. Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions. Basic mechanical aptitude is a plus. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hard hat, safety shoes, gloves, and hearing protection. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check. Regular attendance and punctuality are required.

Physical Demands:
Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform repetitive motions with hands and wrists. Must frequently push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted; and occasionally up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Must have adequate visual acuity (close, distance, and depth perception) and the ability to adjust focus. Able to hear and communicate clearly in a loud environment.
Work Environment:
Frequent exposure to extreme heat, especially during summer paving seasons (temperatures over 90°F). High noise levels requiring hearing protection. Exposure to oils, lubricants, and potential hazardous materials (e.g., asphalt, chemicals). Work performed near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and electrical equipment, with risk of injury (e.g., burns, falls, crush injuries).
