Job Summary:
The Skilled Tuckpointer will be responsible for meticulously restoring and repairing deteriorated mortar joints in various masonry structures, including brick, stone, and block. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of diverse masonry systems, expert-level proficiency in tuckpointing techniques, and a keen eye for detail to ensure seamless integration and long-lasting results. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects, from residential properties to large-scale commercial and historic buildings, often requiring work at heights using scaffolding, swing stages, or aerial lifts.
Responsibilities:
Accurately assess the condition of existing mortar joints and determine appropriate restoration methods. Safely and precisely remove deteriorated or damaged mortar using hand tools (chisels, hammers) and power tools (grinders, saws) without damaging surrounding masonry. Prepare and mix various types of mortar, ensuring correct consistency, color matching, and adherence to specifications (e.g., lime mortars for historic preservation). Carefully apply new mortar, achieving uniform joint depths and smooth, consistent finishes. Execute specialized tuckpointing techniques to create a visually appealing finish, including the application of contrasting colors to enhance the appearance of fine mortar lines. Perform related masonry tasks such as brick replacement, stone repair, and caulking as needed. Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations, including OSHA guidelines, when working at heights, operating machinery, and handling materials. Maintain a clean and organized work area, properly disposing of debris and waste materials. Collaborate effectively with other masons, laborers, and project managers to ensure efficient project completion and quality assurance. Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and project specifications.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience as a Skilled Tuckpointer or in a similar masonry restoration role. Proven expertise in mortar removal, mixing, and application techniques. Strong knowledge of different mortar types (e.g., Type N, S, M, lime mortar) and their appropriate applications. Exceptional attention to detail, precision, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship. Ability to color-match mortar to existing masonry. Proficiency in operating relevant hand and power tools, including grinders, pointing trowels, chisels, and drills. Comfortable working at various heights on scaffolding, swing stages, and lifts; relevant certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30) preferred. Physical stamina and strength to perform demanding manual labor, including lifting up to 75 lbs regularly and working in diverse weather conditions. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
