Job Summary:
The Traveling Carpenter’s Assistant will work closely with lead carpenters to provide essential support in all phases of carpentry. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner, possess a strong work ethic, and demonstrate a commitment to safety and quality. This role requires extensive travel, often for extended periods, and the ability to adapt to changing work environments and project demands.
Key Responsibilities:
Material and Tool Management:
Assist with the loading, unloading, and transportation of materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites. Maintain an organized and clean work area, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly stored and in good working order.
Site Preparation:
Prepare and clean construction sites, including setting up scaffolding, ladders, and other necessary equipment. Perform demolition and debris removal as required.
Carpentry Support:
Assist lead carpenters with measuring, cutting, and shaping wood, plastic, and other materials. Help with the assembly and installation of framework, structures, and fixtures, such as walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows, and cabinetry.
Finishing Work:
Support finishing tasks, including sanding, staining, painting, and applying sealants.
Safety Compliance:
Adhere to all company and industry safety standards and protocols. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and report any safety hazards to the lead carpenter or project manager.
Qualifications and Skills:
Experience:
Previous experience in construction, carpentry, or a related field is highly preferred. Basic knowledge of carpentry techniques and hand/power tools is a strong asset.
Physical Fitness:
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), bending, stooping, and working at heights.
Travel Readiness:
Must be willing and able to travel extensively and be away from home for extended periods. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.
Work Ethic:
Strong work ethic with a track record of reliability and punctuality.
Teamwork and Communication:
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow verbal and written instructions.
Problem-Solving Skills:
Resourceful and able to think critically to overcome on-site challenges.
Working Conditions:
This position involves working in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. The work schedule will vary depending on project deadlines and may include evenings and weekends. Travel and accommodation arrangements will be provided by the company.
