Duties Description Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Trades Specialist will perform journey-level work in the carpentry trade. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing a variety of duties in new construction, restoration, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and repair of park and historic site facilities and structures using the tools of the carpentry trade in a skilled manner.
  • Fabricating, constructing, repairing, replacing, and performing preventative maintenance on regional facilities and other structures (heavy labor).
  • Adhering to professional codes and regulations common to the carpentry trade.
  • Laying out work from blueprints, specifications, or instructions, and diagnose problems; drawing rough sketches or preparing plans to scale; making detailed estimates for costs, including time and materials for various projects; and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Acting independently with a minimum of direct supervision and maintaining responsibility for overall coordination and execution of projects.
  • Training employees and assigning, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating their work and assisting in other areas of park operations.
  • Other related duties as required.

The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR

  • successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program
  • Such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work.

Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
  • Must be able to pass a physical for respirator use and be able to work from heights.
