Duties Description The Facilities Department at the University at Buffalo invites applicants for our Trades Specialist Carpenter position. The incumbent must possess a knowledge of carpentry equipment and systems. Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in the safe use of hand and power tools. Incumbent will be responsible for completing the tasks listed below at a journey-level competency as a Carpenter in

Facilities Campus Operations:
  • Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, molding, ceilings and office furniture.
  • Follow blueprints and building plans to meet the needs of customers.
  • Planning, layout, installing and constructing building frameworks, including walls, floors and door frames.
  • Measure, cut, and shape wood, plastic, and other materials.
  • Properly using equipment, material and tools in a safe and professional manner.
  • Being proficient in the application of building codes.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Four years of full

  • time experience in carpentry work under a skilled trades person which could provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of Armed services; OR successful completion of a NYS two-year Carpenter Traineeship or NYS two-year carpenter training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent carpenter two-year training or apprenticeship program;• OR four (4) years of full-time experience in carpentry.
  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program included a total of 288 hours of trade specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint /schematic reading coursework.

Coursework must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Departmental Operation Needs:

The successful candidate:

  • The incumbent must have a journeylevel understanding of carpentry skills and systems.
  • Must posses problem solving to calculate accurate measurements when dealing with building structures.
  • Must communicate well with other employees
  • Must possess and have demonstrated positive customer service skills
  • Must be able to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions
  • Must be able to communicate well with the entire campus community and demonstrate a willingness to provide customer service and support when advised of problems and equipment malfunctions
  • Properly use equipment, material and tools in a safe and professional manner
  • Incumbent of this position must be willing and able to respond to after hour calls resulting from equipment and system failures that may arise at any time of day or any day of the week
  • The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all plumbing system
Physical Demands:

Candidate will be working near electrical equipment, gas-fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other equipment and in conditions that could potentially be hazardous if industry best-practices and safety procedures are not followed. The successful candidate is required to have confidence in their own abilities, and be able to work safely and proficiently on this equipment and in this environment, at any time of day or day or week. Bending, twisting, ability to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Candidate must be able to stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push and pulling of material and equipment and must be able to perform the physical demands of the position as outlined in the Position Summary.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A valid NYS Drivers license; or otherwise be able to demonstrate that the transportation requirements of the job can be met.
  • Lock-out/Tag-out training
  • Experience with a variety of machines and tools to perform the work, including power saws, cranes and drills. Be
