Department:

The Inspection Department enforces building codes and issues building permits for the City of Huntsville. Our goal is to provide protection for the health, safety, and welfare of the general public in relation to the use and occupancy of structures by enforcement of adopted Building Codes and to protect the general public from abuse by unlicensed Contractors and sub-contractors by enforcement of Contractor Licensing Laws.

Gas and Mechanical Inspector I Position Overview, Qualifications and Necessary Requirements:

This is journey level inspection work in securing and maintaining compliance with gas and mechanical construction codes. Work involves the inspection of a variety of heating, air conditioning, ventilation, duct work and gas installations to determine if plans, workmanship, and materials comply with related codes and ordinances. Work is performed with independence in the field; however, a supervisor is available for assistance when necessary. High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency or graduation from a technical school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and experience demonstrating extensive knowledge, skills and abilities with respect to gas and mechanical systems regulated by the International Fuel Gas Code and the International Mechanical Code. Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Current Certifications/Licensures Required Upon Hire and Must be

Maintained:

Either licensed as an Alabama Certified Journeyman Gas Fitter, licensed as an Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor or Certified as a Mechanical & Gas Inspector through International Code Council.

Gas and Mechanical Inspector II Position Overview, Qualifications and Necessary Requirements:

This is an advanced journey level of gas and mechanical inspection work in securing and maintaining compliance with mechanical and gas construction codes. Work involves leading, providing assistance and advice to mechanical and gas inspectors and in conducting the more difficult and complex inspections. Work also involves conducting onsite inspections of a wide variety of heating, air conditioning, ventilation, duct work and gas installations to determine if plans, workmanship, and materials comply with related codes and ordinances in residential, commercial, and industrial building installations. High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency or graduation from a technical school accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education . Either licensed as an Alabama Certified Journeyman Gas Fitter and licensed as an Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor or Certified as a Mechanical & Gas Inspector through International Code Council and a minimum of ten years of gas & mechanical trade construction experience is required or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates 10 years of gas & mechanical trade construction experience. Either licensed as an Alabama Certified Journeyman Gas Fitter and licensed as an Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor or Certified as a Mechanical & Gas Inspector through International Code Council. A minimum of ten years’ building construction trade experience is required. Valid Driver’s License and good driving record.
