SUMMARY•Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work related to building inspection and plans review to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code (FBC), City of Cape Canaveral ordinances, and other applicable state and federal regulations. This includes inspection of buildings under construction, alteration, repair, or occupancy, and review of plans, specifications, and permit applications. The position also performs code enforcement and may assist with special assignments related to floodplain management, emergency response, and City rating systems. Due to the nature of the work, appropriate safety footwear must be worn at all times in designated areas. The City provides reimbursement for approved safety shoes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspection Duties Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial structures during and after construction to ensure compliance with FBC, zoning regulations, approved plans, and building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and energy codes. Inspect foundations, framing, roofing, HVAC, wind resistivity features, fire safety elements, and structural components. Conduct reinspections to ensure corrections have been made and compliance achieved. Issue deficiency notices, Stop Work Orders, and inspection reports. Investigate unsafe or hazardous conditions, deterioration, or lack of required maintenance. Code Enforcement Respond to and investigate complaints about potential building or zoning code violations. Prepare and deliver Notices of Violation and other enforcement documentation. Prepare and present cases before the Special Magistrate or Code Enforcement Board. Coordinate enforcement actions with Police, Fire, and other City departments. Customer Service & Technical Assistance Answer inquiries from contractors, homeowners, architects, and developers regarding building codes and permit processes. Interpret codes and advise on compliance procedures. Maintain courteous and professional communication at all times. Administrative & Reporting Maintain accurate inspection and plan review records. Prepare written and electronic reports. Assist in compiling data for departmental reports and legal actions. Use various databases and permit software to track activities. Maintains a strong commitment to City of Cape Canaveral Organizational Values Perform other duties, as required. Additional Job Functions Attend training, workshops, and continuing education to maintain and enhance certifications. Assist with special programs (e.g., Floodplain Management, Community Rating System). Stay updated on changes to codes, ordinances, and industry practices. Perform other related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE
•High School Diploma or GED from State of Florida accredited educational institution plus certification from accredited college or technical school in related area and five years of work experience in a construction, building inspection, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
•Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver’s License and safe driving record. Possess at least one Standard Certification from the Florida Building Code Administration and Inspection Board per FS Ch. 468, Part XIII. Candidates with a Provisional Certification must obtain Standard Certification within two (2) years. Must complete Code Enforcement training (Florida Association of Code Enforcement•FACE) within 24 months of hire.
