Job Summary:
The Locator is responsible for accurately identifying and marking underground utilities related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), including fiber optic cables, power lines, and other infrastructure. This role ensures safety and damage prevention during excavation and construction activities. The Locator will interpret utility maps, use electronic detection equipment, and collaborate with project teams and third-party contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
Accurately locate and mark ITS infrastructure such as fiber optics, electrical lines, and conduits. Interpret site plans, blueprints, and utility records to determine location of underground systems. Communicate with supervisors, contractors, and utility companies to confirm locate requests and project schedules. Properly complete documentation for each locate, including photographs and GPS coordinates where required. Maintain locating equipment and report any issues or malfunctions promptly. Respond to emergency or on-call locate requests during nights, weekends, or holidays as required. Follow all company safety protocols and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Assist with minor ITS-related tasks when not performing locating duties, as directed by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. 1-2 years of experience in utility locating, ITS, or roadway construction preferred. Ability to read construction drawings and utility maps. Proficiency with electronic locating equipment (e.g., electromagnetic locators, GPS). Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Ability to pass background check and drug screening. Must be authorized to Work in the US.
Working Environment & Conditions:
Work is performed outdoors year-round in a variety of conditions including: Extreme heat and high humidity during summer months. Rainy, windy, or cold weather conditions, depending on location and season. Dusty, noisy, and high-traffic environments alongside active roadways and highways. Frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Regular lifting and carrying of equipment up to 50 lbs. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as high-visibility clothing, hard hats, gloves, and eye protection is required. Exposure to live traffic, heavy equipment, and construction zones. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or irregular hours, especially for emergency locate requests or night work zones.
