Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30PM Building inspections are an important service provided by our County to protect the public against hazards caused by defective materials and workmanship in building constructions and as our County continues to develop, we are currently looking for Building Inspectors to join our team. This is technical work enforcing building codes and regulations. Duties involve inspecting and testing buildings and installations or office work reviewing and interpreting approved plans and specifications for compliance with applicable building codes and regulations. An employee in this classification is responsible for protecting the public against hazards caused by defective materials and workmanship in building constructions. Duties require skilled technical examinations and the application of standard trade practices to building inspections. The incumbent may work in the field as assigned throughout the unincorporated areas of the county. The incumbent reports to a lead inspector, supervisor, management official or designee. What Would You Do? Checks each project for defects, omissions, violations, and other departures from correct procedure and county building codes. Makes technical inspections of signs, new buildings and installations or modification of existing building constructions. Issues notice of non-compliance where work is not correct and directs to the attention of the Chief Building Inspector. Inspects all work upon completion and signs permit giving final approval for the county that the work is safe for life and property. Makes routine and periodic inspections of area assigned to check for violations and hazardous conditions. Investigates complaints of defective building installations reported as safety hazards; makes re-inspections as directed; reports violations. Performs building tests on equipment and materials as directed. May assist in the initial training of lower level Building Inspectors. May perform data entry and retrieval functions in researching violations and scheduling inspections. In addition to being the back up for building inspectors, the Building Inspector / Office Support will have several office tasks: Private Provider permit management (Primary Task) Assist with Flood documents review. Assist with building code enforcement (Inspections if needed). Assist with Milestone inspection document review process. Performs related work as assigned or required. What Do You Need To Have? Building Inspector 1 (

Salary Range:

$42,972.80 – $68,744.00) High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) or vocational school graduate and five (5) years of experience in the field of construction or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that meets eligibility requirements according to one of the criteria in Florida Statute 468 covering examinations and certifications for persons who take the examination for certification as a Building Code Inspector. Pinellas County requires inspectors to pass the test and acquire the license within 12 months of hire date. As a condition of employment, all candidates must secure license within 12 months of hire and continually maintain a valid certificate as a State of Florida Building Inspector in accordance with the requirements of FS 468 Additional Requirements Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report. Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the methods and materials involved in building construction, and of standard building testing devices. Knowledge of possible defects and faults in construction or hazardous conditions and of effective corrective measures. Knowledge of the regulations governing building construction in the unincorporated areas of the county. Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications, and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process. Ability to apply computer applications and software. Ability to diagnose defects and hazards in old and new building construction and enforce specifications and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to keep records and to prepare and submit reports. Ability to complete the continuing education required by the state.
