GDOT District 3 – West Central Georgia (Thomaston, Macon, Perry, Newnan, Columbus, and surrounding areas)

POSITION SUMMARY
This position involves daily inspection and documentation of construction activities to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract documents. The Construction Engineering Inspector plays a critical role in monitoring quality, performing field measurements, and identifying discrepancies to ensure successful project delivery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Observe and document contractor activities to verify adherence to project specifications. Perform standard field measurements and calculations to track quantities and completed work. Maintain daily inspection reports, documenting labor, equipment, materials, and site activities. Conduct on-site materials testing for concrete, soils, asphalt, and other construction elements. Prepare as-built sketches and field notes as required. Identify and escalate issues, discrepancies, or changes in field conditions. Collaborate with contractors, engineers, and project managers to ensure alignment and resolve issues. Operate field testing equipment and maintain accurate test records. Support other inspection or field duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND
ABILITIES
) High school diploma or equivalent Minimum of 3 years of relevant construction inspection experience Valid driver’s license Familiarity with civil and structural construction methods and materials Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) Strong communication and documentation skills Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications Attention to detail, reliability, and ability to work independently Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
(KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND
ABILITIES
) ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I NICET, ICC, or GDOT certifications (preferred but not required) Experience preparing field sketches or as-built drawings Understanding of construction scheduling and pay quantity tracking
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Field work required in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to construction site conditions Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods and navigate uneven terrain Visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written/verbal communication and operate safely on job sites
