Building Code Inspector I Cherokee County, NC 75 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC 28906 Position Announcement (If not fully qualified as an Inspector I, consideration will be given to hire as an Inspector Trainee at a starting salary of $41,321.00)

Full Time Posting Dates:

June 11, 2025 until filled Work description : This person must perform inspections of construction projects to enforce local and state laws, ordinances, specifications, and standards. Assist in review of construction plans, correspond/meet with contractors to review specifications, inspect construction in progress and upon completion. Position requires considerable knowledge of construction techniques, processes and materials and the corresponding laws and standards. Receives complaints in regard to defective constructions and handles enforcement problems. Performs re-inspections as needed and works closely with contractors to ensure understanding of any noted issues.

Physical Requirements :

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

Minimum Training and Experience :

Requires High School Diploma or GED and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in engineering, construction, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants having prior building code inspection experience.
