Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy. This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually. Essential Functions The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Inspects construction projects throughout the process of the project to ensure that code regulations are met. Enforces state and local building codes, pursuing legal remedies if necessary to stop violations; recommends judicial actions and may be required to testify in court against violators of the State building code. Advises contractors in interpreting and applying code regulations. Notifies responsible parties of defects and re-inspects to determine if corrective actions have been taken; issues stop orders if necessary. Records required inspection results for each job for future reference. Maintains records of inspections and prepares necessary reports. Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High School Graduation or GED equivalent. Trade school course work in building construction trades. For Level I
- One (1) year of construction trades work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. For Level II
- Two (2) years of construction trades work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. For Level III
- Four (4) years of code enforcement or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Special Certifications and Licenses For Level I
- State of North Carolina Level I certification in electrical, building, mechanical and plumbing codes at the level required within three years of employment. For Level II
- State of North Carolina Level II certification in electrical, building, mechanical, plumbing and fire codes at the level required within three years of employment. For Level III
- Level III certification in all five certification areas (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fire) within three years of employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history per policy. Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following: A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing. A background check for all candidates. Some positions also require a credit check. Additional screening and testing required for some positions. Within 3 days of the start of your employment with the County, you must be able to provide proof of your eligibility to work in the US.
