00 Job Description The City of Raleigh is seeking an Assistant Chief Commercial Electrical Inspector to join our Planning and Development Department. This role will be responsible for overseeing and conducting inspections of commercial electrical systems to ensure compliance with local, state, and national electrical codes. This position assists the Chief Electrical Inspector in managing inspection staff, providing guidance on complex inspections, and enforcing regulations to maintain and ensure that all electrical installations meet or exceed local and national safety standards.

The Planning and Development Department/ Building Safety Division is responsible for planning and visioning for the future growth of Raleigh and permitting and inspections for residential and non-residential development projects. Duties and Responsibilities Inspections & Compliance:
Perform and oversee inspections of commercial electrical installations to ensure compliance with applicable codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA, local regulations). Investigate and resolve electrical code violations, safety hazards, and complaints.
Leadership & Supervision:
Assist in supervising electrical inspectors, providing technical guidance and support. Train and mentor staff on electrical codes, inspection techniques, and regulatory updates. Participate in performance evaluations and recommend corrective actions when needed.
Technical Support & Code Interpretation:
Advise contractors, engineers, architects, and the public on electrical code requirements. Stay updated on new electrical codes, trends, and industry standards. Assist in developing policies, procedures, and training programs for electrical inspections.
Documentation & Reporting:
Prepare detailed reports on inspection findings, violations, and corrective actions. Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, and enforcement activities.
Collaboration & Communication:
Work with other departments, such as fire and building inspection, to ensure overall compliance. Represent the department in meetings, hearings, and professional associations.
Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in building construction or related field and two years of code enforcement and/or inspection experience OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Licensing and Certifications Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire Licensure in four different building trades North Carolina Level III Inspection and/or Plans Examiner certification
Additional Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local, commercial and building electrical codes and systems, safety standards and devices and troubleshooting techniques Familiarity with large-scale installations and complex systems Proficient in reading blueprints, electrical schematics, and building plans Ability to work in high-pressure environments with tight deadlines Ability in interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards Time management and organizational and communication skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex electrical issues
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
