  • The Challenge
  • We are hiring an experienced Engineering Technician to join our Division 11 team as a project roadway/structure inspector.

In this role, you will

  • Support senior engineers administrating highway construction contracts
  • Monitor contractors daily operations
  • Perform/review test reports to ensure all work and materials conform to specifications, plans, and contract documents
  • Perform contract administration duties, such as pay record entry/review, materials received reports, certified payroll review, daily diary review, as-constructed plans preparation, and monthly quantity verification prior to estimate payment
  • Resolve daily constructability issues and troubleshoot problems to mitigate delays to project delivery
  • Assist other NCDOT staff and contractors in utility relocation efforts by inspecting and tracking relocation work
  • Anticipate contract problems and advise engineering staff of the need for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery, and quality of delivered project
  • Monitor contractors operations to ensure compliance with subcontract agreements and with the contract Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) requirements
  • Ensure compliance with NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act and that all work performed in permitted areas is done in accordance with permits
  • Direct and schedule work of junior technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of construction projects to ensure they are built according to contract documents in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Manage all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from senior engineers
  • Actively engage with leadership, management, counseling, and training NCDOT and contractors’ technicians
  • Communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing projects’ progress.
  • What You Bring
  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction, contracts, plans, standards and specifications
  • Experience performing inspections, materials sampling and testing (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications
  • Experience with contract administration, and maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans
  • Communications skills to effectively communicate with engineers, developers, the public, public officials, and NCDOT staff, and to communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner, both verbally and in writing
  • Good engineering judgement to make independent decisions
  • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites, including heights, highway traffic, weather extremes, and climbing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction
  • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing
  • Computer knowledge and skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook). Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred
  • Advanced working knowledge of math functions
  • Ability to work nights/weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours, if needed, on any assigned project in Division 11

  • Education and Experience
