Job Description

Electrical High Voltage Foreman I – Facilities Services – UTK 4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars Knoxville, TN The Electrical High Voltage Foreman I provides oversight and direction of the campus electrical utility high voltage system. They will be responsible for the supervision of employees, planning and preparing field work, as well as ensuring the employee has proper training to do the work required. They will assist and support the operations and BAS electrical group as well as support the Superintendents and fill in for them during absences. This position exists to supervise, layout, construct, install, modify, maintain, and repair the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s medium voltage electrical distribution system including protection and metering systems to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of electrical power to the Campus. Supervise the maintenance, operation and construction of University electrical systems, both underground and overhead, including but not limited to 15 and 5 KV distribution, outdoor lighting systems, secondary electrical systems and all related equipment such as switches, transformers, capacitors, and generators. Plans, performs, and supervises underground or overhead construction, cable installation, splicing operations, and transformer and switch installations. Keeps records as required, plans and coordinates daily work, schedules outages, and orders, parts, materials and equipment. Coordinates operations with local utilities and other entities as required. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, creating safe work habits and training employees and others as necessary in the performance of their duties. Works special events and outages as required. Oversees the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as line trucks, digger derricks, aerial bucket trucks, lifts and other special equipment and tools. Supervise the installation, repair and maintenance of related facilities for other departments such as sports lighting, public lighting, major renovations and modifications and underground construction. Inspects electrical and other work in progress by visually observing completed work as well as work in progress. Interacts with design personnel to provide technical expertise for projects, assists the Utility Project Management team on capital projects, and assists and instructs other craftsmen in the performance of their duties. Approves and submits employee time records, mentors and instructs employees and participates in personnel matters as necessary. Plans work, estimates costs, reads blueprints and performs takeoff of materials. Plan preventive maintenance programs, complete reports and analysis to establish trends and to provide appropriate recommendations for the continued safe and reliable operation of the campus electrical distributions systems, currently, and well into the future in anticipation of the campus master plan.

Required Qualifications Education:

High school diploma or GED Vocational or technical training OSHA 1910.129, confined space entry training, lockout/tag-out, and electrical safety for linemen

Experience:

Eight years or more in a high voltage environment or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience with three years of supervisory experience. Education may be substituted for experience on a year-to-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Extensive technical knowledge and understanding of electrical distribution systems and equipment, controls, substation equipment and related areas of work. Ability to organize, prioritize and perform under extreme pressure in both a public contact and internal departmental capacity. Ability to lead and supervise a large group of employees in the performance of their duties in a highly technical and sometimes hazardous and hectic environment.

Associate’s Degree Experience:

Ten years of experience in electrical utility and/or industrial, construction and operations electrical with five years of supervisory experience leading electricians and electrical technicians in the performance of their duties.
