POSITION SUMMARY:

The Railroad Trackman works as a crew member to maintain, repair, and replace rails, ties, switches, and ballast. This person uses hand tools and operates heavy equipment. The position starts as a Trackman, with an opportunity to qualify as a machine operator once the necessary knowledge has been learned. This position reports to work daily with some overnight travel required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Carry and place track materials using hand tools such as tie tongs, rail tongs rail forks, lining bars, shovels, and jacks Install railroad tracks and embankments including special track work, road crossing signage, and rail lubricator Align and slide track tie plates and cut rails to specified lengths Handle drilling activities for insertion of bolts or joints Align and gauge deviations in track surfaces in order to ensure train safety Install, repair, and replace signs on railroad crossings Remove brush and other vegetation from between rails Perform lubrication activities on joints, angle bars, and switches Perform authorized repairs and document outcomes of all repair activities Lay and fix foundations for tracks and replace worn out or rough rail ends Rebuild roadbeds and lay new rail sections Operate picks, shovels, bulldozers, and spike mauls for long periods of time (sometimes all day), as well as specialized hydraulic railroad power tools Attend callouts to repair damage done to tracks in the event of a derailment Right derailed rolling stock and assist in lubricating wheel bearings Comply with company and federal rules, policies, and procedures – wear required safety equipment, respond to and act on safety concerns. Requirements Willing to Travel Must be 18 years of age or older Willing to work in the elements in all weather conditions (extreme hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet, etc.) Understand and follow verbal and visual communications Understand respond to audible and visual signals and warnings Recognize, avoid, and report potential hazards American Track is a drug-free Company, employees are subject to pre-employment and random drug tests Willing to submit to a background check Must pass all required assessments/trainings Willing and able to travel to various job sites, including those that require overnight stay and those that require short notice mobilization Interact effectively as a crew member Capable of working unsupervised at time Available to work full-time (40hrs/wk.) subject to overtime, on-call (24/7), alternating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
