Job Description

Laborer (Part-Time) Pierce Co Board Of Commissioners 312 Nichols Street, Blackshear, GA 31516 POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for completing general manual labor tasks such as flagging, shovel work, lifting, moving, and could include operating light equipment such as, backhoe, front-end loader, grass mower, small bulldozer, and road graders used in road repair and maintenance. Must work in varying weather conditions. Must follow the safety rules for the use of the assigned equipment. Works under the supervision of the Road Superintendent and/or Road Crew Leader. •This position is an excellent opportunity for high school students participating in the Work-Based Learning Program•

EXAMPLES OF WORK

The following examples of duties and associated tasks are typically performed by this position. No attempt is made to be exhaustive in this listing.

Major Duties:

Performs manual labor incidental to the project to which assigned. Operates backhoe and small bulldozer and other light equipment in digging and backfilling, cleaning drainage ditches and laying pipes. Tearing out beaver damns by hand Patching pot holes with cold asphalt Operates grass mowers. Services and may perform minor maintenance on assigned vehicle and inspects for proper maintenance. Removes debris from work site by using a front-end loader. On call work will be required on rotation basis after probation period.

Other Duties:

Assists in the tasks related to construction & maintenance activities of roads & bridges. Performs other duties as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF

Roads & geographic layout of the county.

SKILLED IN

Use of the equipment assigned to the classification and of the hazards of its operation and the appropriate safety rules.

ABILITY TO

Be trained in the operation of heavy specialized equipment; follow oral & written instruction; establish & maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The following standards express the minimum background of training & experience required as evidence of an applicant’s ability to qualify for positions of this class. Other training or experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify the applicant for the position. Possession of sufficient education to read and understand manuals on the operation of the equipment. Possession a valid State of GA motor vehicle operator’s license of the appropriate class for the operation of the vehicles assigned to the position.
