Job Description

  • Summary:
  • This is an entry level position for Tombigbee Electric Power Association (the “Association”).

Employee will conduct a wide variety of tasks involved with clearing and maintaining ROW forconstruction and maintenance of electric distribution line and related distribution systemfacilities. The applicant must be a member of the Association, or dependent living with parent(s)that are members of the Association, and must live within the Association serviceterritory. 

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • -Clears undergrowth around existing utility structures and along the right-of-way
  • Clears trees and brush from areas designated for construction of new overhead andunderground distribution line.
  • Utilize mechanical and chemical means for controlling ROW
  • Operates various pieces of equipment used to clear ROW including but not limited to: chainsaws, axes, Kaiser blades, hand tools, tractors, bush hogs, motorized brush chippers,trucks and trailers, trucks of various sizes.
  • Maintains and services equipment to keep in good and safe working condition. Performsdaily inspection of equipment to include safety inspections
  • Maintains records related to maintenance and repair of ROW clearing equipment
  • Sets up appropriate warning signs, safety cones, and other barricades around utilityvehicles on the roadways and when working along public roadways the highway
  • Operate equipment in a manner in order to protect personnel and the public from debris orhazards produced by clearing ROW
  • Attends periodic safety meetings
  • Removes and chips brush from new and old ROW.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary from time to time to support other functions ofthe Association 
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities. 
  • Supervisory Controls
  • Nature and extent of supervision received by the employeeReoccurring situations are considered normal work assignments.

Work is normally assignedby the Foreman. Other work is assigned at the discretion of the General Foreman/BranchManager as required by the workload of the office. Employee carries out regular workassignments independently, or with a group and is responsible for the quality of the work ofhimself and the group. Contact with the General Foreman/Branch Manager is available foradvice and assistance as required. Employee should seek approval when necessary and keepForeman informed of any unusual problems and status of activities.

  • Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Lineman training or education is preferred, but not required. Position is subject to pre-employment skills testing and screenings. 
  • Knowledge and Skills
  • Working knowledge of electric utility industry; knowledge of systems and safety manual.

Abilityto handle multiple tasks. Knowledge of operation of trucks, tractors, bush hog, chain saw,tools, Kaiser blades and similar tools or equipment. Basic mechanical knowledge required inoperating a variety of motorized and/or mechanized equipment. Strong organizational, andcustomer service skills. The ability to climb a pole and a lack of any fear of heights arepreferred. Ability to work around electrical apparatus required. Applicant must take directionwell, follow safety instruction, be punctual and be a team player. 

  • Physical Requirements
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required t walk, stand, usehands and arms to reach/pull, lift, talk and hear.

The employee must routinely lift and/or moveup to 100 pounds alone and occasionally over 100 pounds with a fellow worker. Specific visionabilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, and ability to adjustfocus. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle and a truck/trailer combination andoperate a tractor bush hog and motorized brush chipper as well as all tools necessary forperforming the tasks assigned. 

  • Working Conditions
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weatherconditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work hours can be longand irregular especially during power outages and emergency situations. Occasional overnighttravel is involved. May be subject to call 24 hours a day. Employee will be required to wearthe appropriate protective safety gear as required by particular job situations and wear clothingthat meet OSHA’s protective apparel guidelines. Environment may be dusty and subject toattacks by hornets and bees. May traverse rough and varying terrain. 

  • Certificate, License, Registration
  • Must have a valid class A commercial driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement, if not held must be obtained within 6 months of hire date. 
  • If an offer of employment has been made, a physical examination is required which includes drug testing.
