Personnel division Employment Advertisement LABORER (Highway & Parks) The City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island is conducting a search for Laborers for the Public Works Department, Highway & Parks Division. The person in this position would perform manual tasks in construction and street maintenance, digging, spreading, loading and unloading materials, the operation of air tools and other general related tasks as needed. A high school diploma, or a GED equivalent, is required. The Laborer position requires thoroughness, the ability to perform manual tasks, and experience in heavy manual work are the qualities in the person to fill this position and must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate light truck; asphalt experience is preferable.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Laborer performs manual tasks not requiring skill in construction and maintenance of streets, cleaning streets, digging and spreading materials, loading and unloading materials and operation of air tools; and does related work as required.

JOB DUTIES
  • Performs manual labor work such as cleaning, sweeping streets, spreading gravel and asphalt, patching holes in pavement and loading and unloading materials by hand.
  • Assists in mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Cleans up work site by picking up leftover materials and loading them into trucks.
  • Rakes refuse into piles and picks up tools and equipment.
  • Cuts weeds, helps sand icy streets, removes snow and works with a truck, snow loader or tractor during snow removal operations.
  • Disposes of debris and patrols city dump area.
  • Operates light truck or other light equipment on occasion.
  • Irrigates lawns and flower beds and trims trees and shrubs.
  • Operates a hand mower or a power mower.
  • Sets up and maintains playground equipment.
  • Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in connection with maintenance of parks and recreational areas.
  • Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required. Physical strength, thoroughness, willingness and ability to perform manual tasks, and some experience in heavy manual work.
