Full Job Description Civil Grading Superintendent Job Description:
The Civil Grading Superintendent is responsible for leading and managing multiple grading and site development crews across civil construction projects. This role emphasizes hands-on supervision, project planning, coordination, and efficient execution of earthwork, grading, and utility installations. The Superintendent ensures all work is performed safely, on schedule, and in line with project specifications.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Collaborate with project engineers and the General Superintendent to define grading scopes, benchmarks, and overall project goals. Interpret and review civil site plans, grading plans, and utility drawings to direct field operations effectively. Support documentation processes, including RFIs, shop drawings, and material submittals. Coordinate procurement and delivery of materials and equipment; monitor usage and inventory to prevent shortages or delays. Determine manpower, equipment, and material needs for all grading operations while adhering to budget and timeline constraints. Plan and oversee all civil construction activities (rough/fine grading, erosion control, trenching for utilities) with approval from the General Superintendent or Director of Operations. Lead and supervise field crews—foremen, operators and laborers—providing direction, support, and performance oversight. Monitor project progress through detailed reporting using construction software and weekly production meetings. Ensure all field drawing sets are current and reflect any addenda, ASIs, or revisions. Enforce health and safety standards; maintain accurate records of incidents, toolbox talks, inspections, and disciplinary reports. Attend project meetings and maintain formal records of discussions, decisions, and action items.
Qualifications:
Proven experience managing large-scale civil grading and site development projects. In-depth understanding of grading operations, site utilities, and erosion control techniques. Ability to read and interpret grading plans, site drawings, and cut/fill maps. Knowledge of construction project documentation and procedures. Familiarity with construction management software, especially HCSS (Heavy Construction Systems Specialists). Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). OSHA 30 certification preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Ability to lead, train, and motivate crews while maintaining a strong safety culture.
Physical Requirements:
Capable of walking and working across large, uneven job sites for extended periods. Frequently required to lift/move up to 100 pounds. Must have good visual acuity for interpreting drawings and navigating job sites (close vision, depth perception, color vision, etc.).
