Role:

The HDD Operator is responsible for operating the drilling equipment used in horizontal directional drilling projects. They carry out assigned duties under the direction of the foreman, operating various equipment, including but not limited to excavators, trenchers, or directional bore machines. HDD Operators ensure that drilling operations are conducted safely, accurately, and in compliance with project specifications and environmental regulations. Essential Functions Safely operate the HDD rig and associated drilling equipment according to project specifications, design plans, and established procedures Locates Drill Head with DGI Trac/Falcon Locator Works with all sub site electronics – 752 series, TK & TKD. (Single, dual, and quad beacons). Control the drilling process to achieve the desired bore path, depth, and alignment, adjusting drilling parameters as needed. Collaborate with the HDD locator to ensure alignment with the planned route and enforce safety protocols for a secure working environment. Perform routine maintenance on the HDD rig, conduct inspections, and make necessary repairs to prevent downtime Identify and address challenges during drilling, collaborating with the HDD locator and team members for solutions. Maintain clear communication with project managers, providing updates on progress, challenges, and deviations Oversee the handling and installation of drilling tools, ensuring efficient material use and compliance with environmental regulations. Implement measures to control mud and fluid discharges. Keep accurate records of drilling activities, equipment maintenance, and deviations. Interact with stakeholders, providing updates and addressing concerns. Stay informed about HDD technology advancements through training sessions. Safely operate assigned equipment, conduct pre-trip inspections, and load materials for transport Participate in daily job hazard analyses, utilizing directional drills to place pipes. Assist in securing the work site, equipment, and materials, preparing documents and reports related to work, equipment, and safety. Load materials or equipment for transport from the show-up yard to the job site and secure them appropriately. Demonstrate advanced directional drill experience and possess the ability to travel as needed. Prepare documents, reports, or job aids related to work, equipment, and safety as assigned. Additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma required. 2 or more years of experience with HDD) required. Experience running compact excavator to assist with structure placement, grading, and general excavation. Experience operating utility locator to assist with potholing. Able and willing to shovel consistently and lift between 50- 75 pounds. Current and valid insurable driver’s license (CDL A w/Tanker Endorsement Required). Second only to safety… have a positive attitude! Keen sense of attention to detail. Experience using hand tools such as quick wrenches, heads, reamers, pullers, swivels, etc. Knowledge of mixing fluids for various ground conditions. Have full mobility and the ability to work with your hands above your head. Can stand for extended periods of time and climb stairs.
