JOB SUMMARY

The City of Tarrant is seeking a Power Distribution Helper. Power Distribution Helpers assist Power Distribution Workers in the installation, maintenance and repair of the electrical transmission and distribution system such as poles, cross-arms, switches, secondary and primary wires, transformers, transformer banks, etc. Work often involves the operation of related equipment such as bucket trucks, augers, backhoes, trenchers, etc. Although most of the work is performed on the ground, an employee of this class will occasionally work at heights up to 100 feet as required. An employee in this classification receives specific assignments from a Power Distribution Worker or a supervisor; the employee works as instructed and consults with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the original instructions. Work is reviewed by a Power Distribution Worker or a supervisor while in progress and upon completion for completeness and accuracy.

Class A CDL Experience in a utility company or in residential or commercial construction.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES

Under general supervision of Power Distribution Workers and/or Supervisors, performs work related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution systems and associated structures and devices such as poles, conductors, insulators, switches, transformers, and meters. Without supervision, performs work related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric transmission and distribution systems and associated structures and devices such as poles, conductors, insulators, switches, transformers, and meters. Operates equipment used in work on electric transmission/distribution systems (e.g. line/bucket truck, auger, winch, backhoe, Bobcat, and trencher). Ensures that tools and equipment are available (e.g., line trucks are stocked with the necessary materials, tools, and equipment), assembled, and in proper working order. Follows proper safety protocol as well as uses and wears safety equipment in completion of work. Participates in a Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA) Lineworker Apprenticeship correspondence program and off-site, multiple-day laboratory sessions that include both classroom and field instruction. Monitors and supervises various electrical crews in the operation and maintenance of an electrical distribution system and substations which includes the installation and maintenance of transformers, wires, switches, electric meters and other related equipment. Plans and coordinates electrical projects (i.e., residential, commercial, industrial) to include determination of priorities and project estimates. Communicates with other departments and individuals through phone, radio, emails, and memos to investigate complaints, complete project requirements, and maintain positive relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job involves occasional moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as near roadways and power distribution sites. Work may involve using various hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, and power tools such as a nail guns, augers, and drills. Work is occasionally performed at heights up to 100 feet off the ground, and it often near high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems. May be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic or near animal or wildlife such as snakes, rodents, etc.
