STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Electrician II serves as a first-line supervisor overseeing and participating in the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This position is responsible for planning and prioritizing electrical work, interpreting blueprints and schematics, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards, and leading a team of skilled trades personnel. The incumbent also manages electrical inventory, contractor coordination, emergency systems, and preventive maintenance programs. This role plays a key part in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of campus electrical operations while supporting departmental goals through collaboration, training, and performance management.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervision from employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work and review performance through inspection for proper completion.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Establishes priorities and executes work assignments, studies production schedules and estimates man-hour requirements for completion of job assignments
Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules through knowledge of machine and equipment capacity; requisitions supplies; and inspects stock and materials used
Plans and coordinates installation and wiring of equipment and fixtures such as motors and generators, switches, transformers, switchboards, and fuse boxes according to blueprints, schematic drawings and sketches
Supervises, coordinates, and participates in the installation of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment
Makes recommendations to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product and suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency
Develop, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance schedules for electrical systems to ensure reliability and minimize downtime
Provides on-the-job training and monitors progress in work performance, analyzes and resolves work problems or assists employees in solving work problems as part of the training process
Inspects buildings to detect and locate causes of electrical failures or breakdowns of equipment to determine, recommend or execute corrective measures
Oversees the operation and maintenance of emergency power systems
Inspects tools and equipment used in assigned work area to make repairs and/or recommend replacement
Manages inventory of tools, equipment, and materials and requisitions supplies
Manages relationships with outside contractors and vendors, reviews scopes of work, and ensures adherence to University standards and safety protocols
Responds to campus work requests regarding assigned work and emergencies, taking appropriate corrective action in compliance with departmental guidelines and University and state regulations
Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, operating manuals, schematic drawings, sketches, instructions or layouts in order to implement the required electrical and associated work.
Supervises, trains, hires, evaluates and monitors the performance of assigned staff
Supports, collaborates, and communicates with Facilities Management Directors regarding prioritization of work orders and completion of projects
Assists with the electrical operations budget by monitoring expenditures and recommending cost-saving strategies
Actively participates in department meetings and may serve on committees, as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE
Knowledge of state and local electrical codes
Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity
Knowledge of basic algebra
Knowledge of basic arithmetic
Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in electrical practice such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.
Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work
Knowledge of safety practices and precautions observed in the electrical trade
Knowledge of inspection techniques used in the electrical trade
Knowledge of the types and uses of handheld power tools such as drills, etc.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician’s License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians

Electricians are exposed to the hazards of high voltage, climb and work from ladders and scaffolds, may drive for job related travel, and may work varied hours. Incumbents of this position perform physically arduous tasks under adverse conditions and extremes of heat, cold, dampness and humidity, are exposed to electrical hazards and to the harmful effects of noxious gases and fumes, must stand and work for prolonged periods of time, lift and carry heavy objects and work in cramped or confined spaces at various heights such as floor level and on staging and ladders.
