Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.

This position functions as a Lab Mechanic responsible for maintaining building electrical systems and critical building systems such as controls for water boost systems, sewage lift systems and sump pump systems. Maintains automated lighting controls and other equipment related to campus classrooms. Troubleshoots problems with autoclaves, sterilizers and various lab related equipment and campus specialized water systems. Monitors campus building electrical systems using a variety of meters that record voltage, amperage and monitors for voltage issues. Completes reports and submits them to campus departments.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Optional Guidelines:
experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Demonstrated journey level experience in the electrical trade. Ability to read and interpret complex schematic drawings/blueprints on building systems and equipment. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close. NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Demonstrated electrical experience and knowledge in plumbing systems.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements :
High degree of hand/eye coordination and hand manipulation; ability to climb ladders and scaffolding; ability to move objects weighing over forty pounds with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to work for extended periods of time with hands over head. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close. This position may be required to work in active BSL3 labs. This requires a baseline blood draw, a physical, and vaccines (currently flu and tetanus) as well as annual medical certification, respirator fit testing, and specific training. Entry into such labs requires escort from Environment, Health, & Safety, respirator use, safety attire, and possibly shower in/out.

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
