Job Description:

The Civil Construction Estimator will gather, evaluate, and then prepare detailed total cost information for cost-effectiveness for and during the construction bid process. They may visit construction sites to gather information and analyze proposals, specifications, blueprints, and construction documents in order to understand the project. Estimators work closely with project managers to coordinate and oversee the vendors and/or subcontractors in the bid process. They determine the time, labor, materials, and product costs for the project and communicate the requirements to the client. An estimator works mainly in an office environment but may visit construction sites occasionally as needed to obtain necessary information.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop comprehensive project estimates with a strong emphasis on specialized civil construction disciplines. Erosion control planning and implementation, encompassing sediment control measures, stabilization techniques, and Best Management Practices (BMPs). Site clearing and grubbing operations, including tree removal, topsoil stripping, and debris disposal. Precise excavation and earthwork calculations, including cut and fill analysis, soil compaction, and grading plans. Installation and testing of water, sewer, and storm drain systems, including pipe sizing, material selection, and pressure testing. Implementation of comprehensive stormwater management systems, including detention ponds, drainage channels, and erosion control structures. Accurate estimation of curb and site concrete placement, including formwork, reinforcement, and finishing techniques. Detailed analysis of stone base material selection, placement, and compaction requirements. Asphalt paving calculations, including material volume, layer thickness, and compaction specifications. Conduct in-depth research to identify and qualify specialized subcontractors, utilizing competitive bidding processes to ensure cost-effectiveness. Negotiate complex contractual terms and conditions with subcontractors, ensuring alignment with project requirements and risk mitigation strategies. Prepare comprehensive written proposals, highly accurate cost estimates, detailed project budgets, and timely project updates for clients and project managers. Provide value engineering suggestions. Provide all subcontractors with complete sets of detailed drawings and technical specifications prior to the bid process, ensuring clear understanding and accurate bidding. Attend pre-bid meetings as required to gather critical project information, clarify technical requirements, and address subcontractor inquiries.

Required:

3-5 years of experience with a background in estimating large scale for utility construction and/or excavation for both commercial and residential projects High school diploma or equivalent, or Degree in construction management, estimating, or related field experience. Civil Engineering experience is a plus. Use of AGTEK/Insite software strongly preferred. Proficient in MS Office with a focus on Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong math skills and above average computer skills. Critical thinking skills with ability to problem solve and make effective decisions.
