POSITION SUMMARY
This position works in the Estimating Department to plan and develop thorough bids in new construction and repair/conversion projects. Multiple estimates will be worked concurrently, customers will include Navy, USCG, US Army, MSC, MARAD, NOAA, and commercial owners and operators.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING
Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described. Reviews and analyzes specifications and detailed drawings; develops detailed labor, material, and subcontractor price estimates for required work. Responsible for calculating the projected cost and materials needed for a piping project
Reviews subcontractor quotes to determine the best alternatives and to assure quotes are complete for the required work (including commissioning and freight).
Identifies critical path and long lead work items.
Identifies ambiguities or inconsistencies in specifications or bid packages that could affect cost, prior to review.
Must use sound judgment and decision-making while exercising daily job responsibilities.
This position works independently within a team, following company guidelines and goals identified by the Estimating Manager at our weekly meeting.
Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and employees.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Working knowledge of
Microsoft:
Excel, Project, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word. Must be proficient in the use of Excel to develop detailed labor hour estimates.
Must have good communication skills and be able to work closely with others.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Some college coursework in math and some exposure and knowledge of a production environment is a plus but not a requirement. Desired candidate would have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, institute, or maritime academy, plus three to 5 years shipbuilding field experience in quantity take off and estimating desired. An equivalent combination of education and shipbuilding and estimating experience.
Skills:
Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Project, AutoCAD, and Outlook
or Outlook Express. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management and employees. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. The ability to analyze and interpret regulations, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. The ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra and geometry. The ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
