Summary / Objective

The Chief Estimator is a key member of the construction team, responsible for managing the end-to-end bidding process, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness. This role plays a critical part in securing profitable projects and supporting overall business growth. Lead and support the estimating department, providing guidance, oversight, and training. Recommend and implement cost-saving options and value engineering opportunities to improve bid competitiveness. Maintain and manage estimating and pricing software tools. Attend pre-bid meetings and perform site visits to evaluate existing conditions and verify scope of work. Analyze project specifications, drawings, and related documents to understand the full scope of work. Perform quantity take-offs and input data into estimating systems or spreadsheets. Solicit and negotiate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring best value and product quality. Develop detailed cost breakdowns, including materials, labor, equipment, subcontractor services, and overhead. Prepare and deliver complete, accurate proposals and bid submissions. Produce or coordinate required alternates, shop drawings, and submittals. Collaborate with project managers throughout the lifecycle of a project, including handoff, scheduling, scope clarification, and change management. Maintain an up-to-date database of suppliers, subcontractors, products, and market rates. Participate in departmental and interdepartmental meetings as required. Responsibilities include training team members, task delegation, and establishing departmental best practices. Work Environment The role is primarily based in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. Occasional site visits are required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some overtime, evening, or weekend work may be required depending on project demands. Travel Occasional travel is required for site visits, pre-bid meetings, and client consultations. Required Education and Experience Associate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Minimum of 7-10 years of estimating experience in the construction industry. Proficiency in reading construction plans and documents. Familiarity with estimating and takeoff software (required).
