JOB SUMMARY

The metal sorter position is an entry level position that plays a crucial role in ensuring the thorough separation of both objectionable and valuable materials from the shredder’s material stream. The position is responsible for the manual separation of copper and non-metallic materials such as rags, rubber, plastic, paper and wood from the larger ferrous stream, while also maintaining a safe, clean work environment. In-season (spring to fall) shifts are typically 10 hours or longer. Off-season (winter) shifts may be 8, 9 or 10 hours or longer. Each employee is required to work 1 Saturday per month and is given a weekday off on the week they work their Saturday. Saturdays are maintenance days.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Sort materials from the conveyor 8-10 hours each day. Maintain a clean, safe work environment by cleaning the yard, shredder machinery, and facility areas using shovels, scrappers and brooms. Upon shutdown each day the position will be assigned to either clean the towers, ripple boxes, mill, shaker pan or conveyor line. Tower cleaning requires climbing a 40′ tall ladder; walking upon a catwalk; and entering a 8′ wide cylinder to scrape dirt from the cylinder walls. Ripple box cleaning requires climbing a 20′ tall ladder and entering a box to scrape dirt from the box walls. When not sorting or carrying out daily shutdown activities, the position should inspect, clean, and perform light maintenance on the machinery, conveyors, and area surrounding the shredder operations. Clean the diesels’ air filters and check the radiators. Inspect skid steers, blow out air filters and grease daily. During planned shutdowns the position’s efforts will be redirected to these and other supportive assignments. In the event of an unforeseen breakdown, the position will assist with repairs as requested. Assist with the correct procedural start up and shut down of the shredder diesels as needed each day. Adhere to established safety standards and wear mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Report safety hazards and equipment issues to supervisors. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

This is an active, hands-on position that requires physical stamina, tolerance of heights, and the ability to lift and move heavy materials up to 50 lbs. It involves standing, walking, climbing, bending, and twisting for extended periods. It also involves working at a conveyor sorting materials by hand. A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Previous experience in an industrial environment is helpful but not required. Willingness to work in various weather conditions, across variable shifts, and beyond 8 hours /day is necessary. Strong attention to detail paired with an ability to work independently and as part of a team is required. The ability to identify different types of metals is beneficial. Basic mechanical skills is a plus.
