Excavator Operator Position Summary:

The Excavator Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment, primarily excavators, to support the installation of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) for stormwater, sewer, or drainage systems. This role plays a vital part in trenching, backfilling, and material handling, working closely with the pipe crew (pipe layer, tail man, and hill man) to ensure accurate grade, alignment, and productivity. ________________________________________

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate excavators to dig trenches for RCP pipe installation according to project specifications, grade stakes, and survey markers.
  • Safely lift, lower, and position heavy RCP pipe and structures into trenches as directed by the ground crew.
  • Maintain proper trench depth, width, and slope based on engineered plans.
  • Work closely with the pipe crew to coordinate timing, depth, and pipe placement.
  • Use laser levels, grade rods, or other tools to check trench elevation and slope.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections, maintenance, and cleaning to ensure safe operation.
  • Follow site-specific safety procedures and OSHA regulations at all times.
  • Communicate clearly with spotters, signalers, and other crew members to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist with minor manual labor when needed, including trench prep and backfilling.

Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience operating excavators in underground utility or site work.
  • Skilled in trenching for large-diameter RCP (typically 18″ to 96″) with attention to grade and safety.
  • Knowledge of trench safety (e.g., shoring, benching, and OSHA regulations).
  • Ability to read and understand site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes.
  • Comfortable working around and communicating with pipe crews in tight, high-risk areas.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL a plus.
