Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled vehicle and heavy equipment operation in the construction, maintenance and repair tasks associated with County infrastructure development and public properties management. Employee functions at journey level, w area of assignment may include but is not limited to, Road and Bridge, Solid Waste, utilities systems and public works installation, maintenance and operations. Employee is distinguished from that of the entry level position by knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience with moreplex equipment and machinery. Performs related work as directed.
Essential Job Functions

Operates light and heavy vehicles and equipment in the installation, maintenance and repair functions associated with the assigned functional area; depending on area of assignment, operates equipment that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, flatbed,pactors, back-hoes, loaders, chippers, pan, dozers, draglines, forklifts, graders, stripers, rollers, loaders, trenchers, hydraulic excavator, semi-tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, concrete mixer truck and heavy equipment/trucks.
Identifies potential hazards for the general public during installation, maintenance and repair projects; determines appropriate equipment operating procedures accordingly.
Performs labor intensive,plex construction, maintenance and repair work; works independently or as part of a work crew in installation, maintenance and repair activities in the management and care of County infrastructure and properties.
Participates in the construction, renovation and restoration of streets, bridges, solid waste and utility systems and public works landscapes, grounds, and other County infrastructure.
Performs work in the safe and proper operation of tools, vehicles and equipment inpliance with prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g., sets barricades and cones, preps for excavation and confined space entry, performs traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards.
Inspectspleted work for proper operation, adnce to work orders, and safety.
Performs general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and machinery, e.g., lubricates, services and fuels vehicles and equipment; performs routine light maintenance to vehicles and equipment; washes and maintains vehicles and equipment.
Performs inspection and recording duties as prescribed by department, County, State and related regulatory standards, policies, procedures and requirements.
Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
Two (2) years responsible experience in the operation and general maintenance of a wide variety of construction, maintenance and repair vehicles, light and heavy equipment and machinery; or an equivalentbination of education, training, and experience.
Miscellaneous:
Road & Bridge:
Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Florida Driver’s License (Passenger, Hazardous Materials, and/or Tanker endorsement may be required depending on area of assignment).
Mowing:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to read and write English.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; Ability to read and interpret various documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and related documentation.
Skill in the operation of various vehicles, trucks, light and heavy construction equipment and machinery, and other gasoline and diesel driven motors, e.g., service trucks, forklifts, back hoe, grader, bulldozer, dump trucks.
Considerable knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas and hydraulic powered tools and equipment used in the assigned functional area.
Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Ability to make minor adjustments or repairs to construction machinery, tools and equipment. Knowledge of the hazards involved and of applicable safety precautions and established safety precautions essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor. Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving somebination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 – 100 pounds).
Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass and various chemicals.
