We are currently seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator with experience in scrap processing equipment such as shears, balers, shear cranes, and related machines .
Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a SHEAR, BALER, and other equipment that handles and processes scrap metal. This includes, but is not limited to, mobile shears, stationary shears, balers, and material handler cranes. The operator will work as part of the yard team to meet production goals while maintaining equipment and adhering to safety and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Operation:
Operate hydraulic shears, balers, shear cranes, and other processing equipment to cut, compact, and prepare scrap metal for shipment. Use material handler cranes and loaders to move, sort, and stockpile ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Load and unload trucks as needed using appropriate equipment. Follow production schedules and instructions from supervisors to ensure timely processing.
Safety & Compliance:
Operate all machinery in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Conduct daily pre-operational inspections and report any mechanical issues or damage immediately. Maintain clean and organized work areas to minimize hazards. Assist with yard maintenance tasks as needed, including debris removal and spill containment.
Maintenance & Recordkeeping:
Monitor equipment performance and assist with basic maintenance or lubrication as required. Communicate with maintenance personnel to schedule repairs and prevent downtime. Complete required equipment logs, inspection reports, and shift documentation accurately and on time.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with yard workers, torch cutters, scale operators, and supervisors to coordinate operations. Provide guidance or support to less experienced equipment operators when necessary. Assist with training or mentoring of new team members if assigned.
Required Qualifications:
3+ years of heavy equipment operating experience in a scrap yard, recycling, demolition, or similar industrial setting. Proven experience operating one or more of the following:
SHEAR, BALER, MATERIAL HANDLERS.
Knowledge of scrap metal processing operations and material types (ferrous, non-ferrous). Strong understanding of safety procedures and equipment operating limits. High school diploma or GED preferred. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work outdoors in varying weather, and be available for occasional overtime or weekend work.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification or license for heavy equipment operation (e.g., NCCCO, OSHA 10/30, equipment-specific training). Experience with preventative maintenance programs or computerized maintenance systems. Forklift operation experience is a plus.
