Job Summary Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled tasks required for the construction, maintenance, and repair of West Feliciana Parish roads and bridges. This position requires the use of light and heavy equipment, with a concentration in heavy equipment operation. This position may also use specialty equipment, such as the road grader and/or dump truck. Use of specialty equipment is authorized by special assignment by the Road Superintendent. This position requires 24-hour on-call rotation. Essential Job Functions Safely remove downed trees from roadways. Properly use hand tools and light equipment under limited supervision. Properly use heavy equipment for road construction, repair, and maintenance under limited supervision. Properly use heavy equipment for bridge construction, repair, and maintenance under limited supervision. When assigned, properly use Road Grader to maintain Parish roads under general supervision. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of tools and equipment used to complete job assignments. Complete tasks in work order software system. Education, Experience, & Certifications Ability to read and write. Requires a valid Driver’s License and/or valid Louisiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B or C with appropriate endorsements. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in equipment operation. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge in traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operations. Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operation. Ability to use various technologies such as phones, tablets, computers, and various equipment technologies. Ability to detect needed repairs of tools and equipment and to make necessary operation adjustments. Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather and working conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the successful operation of the department. Work Environment & Physical Demands The work environment conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job operates in the field. Fieldwork will expose the employee to inclement weather, loud noises, moving vehicles and machines, dust, and mud. Fieldwork may require protective clothing including helmet, gloves, goggles, and safety shoes. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, operate tools or controls with hands, operate heavy-duty equipment, hear and talk. The fieldwork may also include walking on a variety of surfaces and negotiating obstacles with structures and construction sites, climbing ladders, crawling in confined spaces, bending and stooping. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must have the ability to drive a Parish vehicle with and without towing equipment.
