The work involves operating gasoline, steam or diesel-powered machinery used in material handling, bridge building, earth moving, and excavating, grading and road maintenance. Originality and independence of action are frequently based on experience and specialized knowledge of the technical processes. Incumbent general receives project assignments from a superior who indicates specific results desired. Essential Functions and Responsibilities The following are examples of work performed for positions in this job class and are not intended to reflect the essential functions of any one position. The essential functions of each individual position are determined and maintained by each individual department. Operates steam, gasoline or diesel-powered machinery used in material handling, bridge building, earth moving, excavating, grading and road construction or maintenance. Operates motor grader to scrape dirt and gravel roads, clear roadside ditches, level and fill road shoulders and for other road maintenance. Operates tractors, bulldozers, power shovel, and similar equipment to level and grade building sites, excavate building foundations and perform related digging and earth moving operations. Checks mechanical conditions and makes minor operating repairs on machinery and equipment. Operates a power crane in dredging, excavating or moving earth, rock, sand, making cuts and fills to grade; moves lumber, piling, girders and similar objects. Works as finisher cat operator or maintenance construction and performs the more difficult finishing and grading operations. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications A high school diploma or GED, and three (3) years’ experience driving bull dozers, motor graders, etc. or Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and three (3) years of related experience and Possession of a valid Mississippi commercial driver’s license.
