OF WORK DEFINITION

This position operates heavy and light equipment and assists in the hands on repair, maintenance, and construction of the water and sewer utilities.

REPORTS TO

The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

At the supervisors directive operates heavy and light construction equipment. Assist with control traffic at work sites. Transports heavy equipment to work sites. Assist in the hands on repair and maintenance of water and sewer utilities. Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of a NC class (B) CDL. Must reside within range of City radio communications ; due to being on standby. (typically within a 20 mile radius of center of City) Must be able to serve on a seven (7) day 24 hour standby rotation every fourth week, for emergency after hour calls.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in water and sewer construction and maintenance procedures. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance procedures. Knowledge of City geography. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships. Skill in performing mathematical calculations. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; emergency response plans; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of related duties in water and sewer repairs and operation of equipment in weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of the City’s water and sewer systems. Success in this position contributes to a safe and well-maintained City infrastructure.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
