Summary:
Responsible for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of rail cars. They ensure the accurate and timely transport of goods, work in compliance with safety regulations, and maintain accurate records of loaded and unloaded items. In addition, this position is responsble for directing crane operators in moving cargo containers and prepares railcars for loading and unloading. Responsibilities:
Prepares rail cars for the correct size of the trailer/containers to be loaded Guides/directs the crane operator in unloading/loading cargo containers Installs inter box connector locks (IBC) and climbs on the rail car to remove and install the IBC lock Sets the Derailer Spot chassis for inbound containers Park inbound trailer/containers Spot outbound trailer/containers for loading Clear bare chassis away from the tracks Operate Heavey Equipment (Side Loader, Forklift, and Crane)
Equipment Operator:
Operate heavy equipment to load and unload shipping containers from railcars and trucks. Use top loaders, side loaders, and/or cranes to stack, move, and organize containers. Perform equipment inspections before and after use to ensure operational safety. Communicate with yard personnel and supervisors to coordinate moves and tasks. Maintain a safe work environment by following established protocols and procedures.
Container and Trailer Movement:
Safely drive hostler trucks to move and position containers and chassis within the terminal yard, adhering to established safety protocols and traffic rules. Follow dispatch instructions and prioritize tasks to ensure timely movement of containers to and from designated locations. Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on hostler trucks to ensure proper functioning and report any maintenance issues or damages.
Yard Maintenance and Organizatio n:
Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe terminal yard by removing debris, snow, or other obstacles that may hinder the movement of containers and trailers. Ensure proper storage and stacking of containers and trailers to maximize space utilization and efficiency. Perform basic maintenance tasks on trailers and containers, such as checking tire pressure, inspecting lights, and reporting any damages or malfunctions.
Documentation and Recordkeeping:
Accurately record container and trailer movements in the terminal’s computer system or logbooks. Update and maintain accurate records of hostler truck usage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities. Complete required paperwork, such as equipment inspection reports and maintenance request forms.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices while operating hostler trucks and performing yard duties. Conduct regular checks of safety equipment on hostler trucks, such as lights, horns, and seatbelts, to ensure functionality. Report any safety hazards or incidents promptly to the appropriate personnel. – Comply with terminal rules and regulations regarding speed limits, parking areas, and designated routes.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicate effectively with dispatchers, gate clerks, and other terminal personnel to ensure the smooth flow of container and trailer movements. Collaborate with yard personnel to coordinate the placement and retrieval of containers and trailers for loading and unloading. Assist in resolving any operational issues or conflicts that may arise within the terminal yard.
Qualifications and Skills:
18 years of age or older High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Previous experience as a hostler driver or in a similar role within the intermodal rail transportation industry is preferred. Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to hostler truck operations. Ability to operate hostler trucks safely and efficiently in various weather conditions and tight spaces. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision. Physical stamina and ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
