About the role The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers back and forth from shop to the yard. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the smooth flow of operations by organizing and positioning trailers for loading, unloading, and transportation. What you’ll do

Trailer Movement:

Move trailers and containers to and from dock doors, parking areas, and staging zones using a yard mule. Ensure all moves are executed efficiently and align with the operational schedule.

Inspection and Maintenance:

Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of yard equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition. Report any maintenance issues or defects promptly.

Safety Compliance:

Adhere to all company and regulatory safety protocols while operating equipment. Maintain clear communication with shop personnel to avoid accidents and ensure a safe work environment.

Load Coordination:

Verify the placement of trailers at the correct dock locations for loading/unloading based on the shipping/receiving schedule. Monitor and communicate trailer status, ensuring timely readiness for transport.

Documentation:

Complete and maintain accurate records of trailer movements and yard activities. Use yard management systems (YMS) or handheld devices to log moves as required.

Other Duties:

Assist with minor yard clean-up tasks or operational support as needed. Work collaboratively with shop staff, drivers, and management to meet operational goals.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Prior experience in a yard driver or similar role preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in operating yard mules or terminal tractors. Basic understanding of shop and transportation operations. Strong communication skills for coordination with team members. Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds as needed. Must work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Certifications:

Valid driver’s license CDL and Health Card. Work Environment Typically outdoors in the yard or on the docks. Fast-paced environment with a focus on time-sensitive tasks. May involve working nights, weekends, or holidays based on operational needs. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Efficiency in trailer movements and yard organization. Adherence to safety protocols and equipment maintenance schedules. Accuracy in reporting and documentation.
