DESCRIPTION
: Performs responsible semiskilled work operating trucks, mowing equipment and less complex related automotive equipment. The work of this class involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and similar automotive equipment to transport men or materials, and to maintain and construct various public facilities. When the nature of work does not require constant operation of assigned equipment employees in this class participate in manual labor incidental to the job such as loading and unloading of equipment, and in performing unskilled or semiskilled maintenance and construction tasks. Assignments may be given in detail for each job, or work may follow well-established routines. Work is reviewed by a superior for quality, quantity, safety of operation and care of equipment. An assignment to this class assumes that the principal duty of an employee is equipment operation and that such operation is not merely incidental to other functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
: Operates trucks on maintenance and construction work, hauling laborers, refuse, brush, rock, materials and equipment; Operates light road roller, dump truck, flat-bed truck, air compressor, light tractors, street sweeper, and other light construction equipment; Operates tub grinder; Operates mowing equipment, machinery, and tractor with boom-mower attachment; Participates in construction and maintenance activities related to assigned equipment; Reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment; Occasionally works as a semiskilled or unskilled worker performing general laboring tasks; Operates a truck with blade attachment in plowing snow, and in sanding and salting streets, servicing trucks and related light construction equipment; some knowledge of the traffic laws and; Operates vacuum truck; Operates street sweeper; Operates valve maintenance machine; Must adhere to all State and Federal guidelines and permit requirements; May serve for instructional purposes or as substitute operator on heavier equipment, such as a backhoe; When not working as an Equipment Operator I, works as Worker I; Performs related tasks as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
: Some knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and regulations governing equipment operation; some working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
for the proper operation of varied and specialized construction and maintenance equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to make required reports; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks, and specialized maintenance and construction equipment; physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
: Must possess a high school diploma or GED and some experience in the operation and routine servicing of trucks or related automotive equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees in this class must possess a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License.
OTHER REQUISITES
: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties by a superior or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. Employees in this class may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and may be in an on-call status from time to time. Physical Requirements :
Task involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 lbs.) items and occasionally very heavy (100 lbs. or over) items, and pushing/pulling light to heavy objects; or may involve the complex operation of gasoline, electric, or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls, fine adjustments or both. Dexterity to operate machinery.
