Cost of Living Adjustments Purpose of Position :

To locate underground utility lines, confirm condition of located lines, and assist with installation and maintenance of utility lines.

Essential Functions :

(Must be able to perform these functions with or without a reasonable accommodation). Locates underground water or gas utility lines; drives to work sites; utilizes a metal detector, ground penetrating radar, or other tools to detect buried lines/valves; digs holes to verify line location and condition; determines measurements of utility lines; paints, marks, or flags location of existing utilities. Reviews and interprets architectural drawings, blueprints, and maps to identify location of utility services. Maintains records of work activities; draws maps of utility line locations. Installs utility lines, installs/replaces meters and meter boxes, installs valve rings and valve boxes, pressurizes meters, adjusts and sets regulators, conducts leak surveys to locate/identify leaks, repairs leaks and broken utility lines, maintains meter stations and rectifier stations, fuses pipes together, connects service for customers, inspects piping, installs appliances, or other related tasks. Conducts testing and inspections, takes readings and records data; performs pressure tests. Transports, hauls, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites. Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Follows established safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations. Assists in ensuring adequate inventory of parts, tools, equipment, and supplies to conduct work activities. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, maps, vehicle maintenance records, or other documents. Regular attendance is required as outlined in the company’s attendance policy.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities :

Must possess and maintain a valid Operator Qualification Certifications applicable to the position as set forth in the Natural Gas Operations and Maintenance Manual. Must be able to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and tools as necessary to complete essential functions, which may include a motor vehicle, utility locator, ground penetrating radar, trencher, backhoe, tapping machine, electric fusion machine, combustible gas indicator, flame ionization unit, gas detection tools, leak detector, metal detector, manhole hook, probe, air compressor, meters, gauges, mechanic tools, hand tools, digging tools, measuring devices, or radio communications equipment. Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize. Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English. Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers. Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly and out of town occasionally. Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs. Must possess effective communication skills with ability to handle difficult people or situations. Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain. Must be able to bend, stoop, twist, reach overhead and lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials up to 50 lbs. Experience and Education Requirements High school diploma or GED; and Vocational/technical training in water distribution/collection systems, natural gas distribution systems, and utility line location; One (1) year previous experience and/or training involving utility distribution systems, utility line location, pipeline installation, utility maintenance, equipment operation, and interpretation of blueprints/drawings; or Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable. Must pass a DOT Drug Screen, physical and criminal background check. Working Conditions May require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or animal/insect bites.
