Job Description:
U.S. Pipe and Foundry is seeking a Casting Supervisor in Bessemer, AL. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of the Casting Department through the supervision of hourly employees engaged in the casting of ductile iron pressure pipe from molten metal.
Essential Functions:
Supervises the work of casting machine crew and crane operators to ensure that working procedures are followed, continuous, efficient operations maintained, and pipe products cast conform to quality standards. Ensure that all work is performed in a safe and efficient manner and the work area is maintained in a neat and orderly condition. Ensures that casting machines are set up properly, troughs and ladles are in place and in good operating condition, pipe molds are acceptable prior to production start-up and all labor, material and equipment required is available. Maintains contact with Inspection and Processing personnel on the status of pipe products being inspected and processed in the Pipe Run area, reviews defective product, determines causes, and implements corrective actions. Maintains contact with Melting Department personnel and communicates molten metal conditions and production delays and takes action to ensure continuous, efficient operations. Enforces the Company’s plant, safety rules and policies as well as issues fair and consistent discipline. Receives, evaluates and responds to first-step grievances as required, consulting with the Casting Manager as required. Works with Continuous Improvement personnel to find, document and implement process improvements. Visually inspects pipe products during and after the cast cycle for defects and takes corrective action when defects are detected. Assures that hourly employees are properly trained and qualified; identifies employees’ training and developmental needs and assists in the implementation of training to meet these needs. Evaluates the effectiveness of manpower utilization, work procedures and cost control methods, and production rates and operating costs and makes recommendations for improvement to the Casting Manager. Performs other related duties as required.
Skills & Other Requirements:
Possesses the ability to troubleshoot creatively, solve problems effectively, and make informed decisions while successfully guiding others through constant change. Must have the ability to plan and direct the hourly workforce and to identify variances in operating conditions and take corrective action.
Qualifications:
Requires high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 3 years of relevant heavy industrial experience.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The employee will be working in a heavy industrial environment exposing the employee to Foundry operations. The employee will be exposed (90% of the time) to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust. Fumes, Molten Metal and Metallic Particles. 10% of the time will be office environment. The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, Walking, Balancing, Stooping, Kneeling, Reaching, Talking, Seeing, Hearing and Sitting.
