SUMMARY:

Pipefitters are tradespeople, welding, and plumbing professionals who build pipe systems used for heating, hot water, cooling, steam, and more. They make sure that pipes are cut, installed, and maintained according to specifications. Their main duties include reviewing plumbing system blueprints, fixing pipes and plumbing systems, and ensuring pipes meet the proper specifications. Their duties range from fabricating piping and materials to assembling systems and ensuring they’re running effectively and do not leak. Outside of the manual labor associated with pipe fitting, they have many responsibilities, including inspecting and repairing pipes running to related equipment, such as radiators and HVAC units, providing estimates on the cost of parts and labor, making recommendations about necessary repairs or changes to plumbing systems, meeting with clients and/or customers to determine their plumbing needs. They’ll use different tools and equipment to measure and mark the tools according to certain specifications and regulations. When installing the pipes, they’ll be sure to secure them safely onto the walls and fixtures using tools like clamps, brackets, and other welding equipment items.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Use saws, cutting torches, and pipe benders to cut and hammer pipes to specification. Study blueprint and construction plans for pipe systems, supports, and related equipment. Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, and fittings through welding, brazing, soldering, and cementing of joints. Utilize pressure gauges and hydrostatic testing to inspect and test installed pipe systems. Electroplate non-ferrous piping materials with tin and lead to obtain an alloy that prevents erosion. Operate pump machines to discard water from flooded facility floors, manholes, and basements. Prepare cost estimates and budgets for a pipefitting project. Install and test water systems such as treatment, recycling, and irrigation systems. Design equipment and systems to reduce water and energy consumption. Inspect work sites to identify environmental hazards that can limit the integrity of a pipe structure. Utilize valve keys and wrenches to regulate liquids, steam, and other gaseous substances from pipes. Oversee the repair and replacement of damaged or worn-out pipe components. Use hands or power tools to drill holes in structures such as walls and decks to allow for pipe passage. Select pipe types, sizes, and quantities required for a pipefitting project. Install and configure automatic pipe control systems. Collaborate with project managers to design the layout for a pipe system. Oversee the selection and procurement of hangers, supports, hydraulic cylinders, and other necessary construction materials. Resolve pipe issues such as clogs or leaks. Utilize pump machines to remove water from flooded basements and manholes. Modify, clean, and maintain pipe systems, fittings, and related equipment. Utilize specialized hand/power tools in removing and replacing worn-out components. Conduct inspections to ensure pipelines are correctly installed and are efficient. Use rules and scribers to measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading. Research to determine the type of pipe most suitable for the transportation of hot, acidic, or alkaline substances. Ensure operations follow building codes, policies, and safety standards. Ready to learn from on-the-job training when necessary. Assisting skilled tradespeople in their duties. Be on call/duty from time to time, when necessary, or in emergencies. Any other activity related or not to pipefitting as required by the operation or by management. 30. EDUCATION AND RELATED JOB EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in pipefitting.
  • Trade school education or apprenticeship.
  • Meet state licensure requirements.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
  • Utilize and operate a range of tools and equipment in installing, maintaining, and repairing pipe systems.
  • Handle, lift, and move heavy pipes, pipefitting materials, and equipment, up to 50 lbs.
  • Skilled in diagnosing pipe systems to identify and fix problems with leaks and clogs.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Welding skills must be able to work carbon steel, MIG welding, and brazing.
  • Knowledge of industry tools.
  • Cutting, threading, and grooving.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
