The Construction & Maintenance Department is responsible for theconstruction, maintenance, and operation of the Company’s naturalgas distribution system. The successful candidate must fully demonstrate specified weldingcompetencies within twelve (12) months of acceptance of theposition and is subject to periodic competency testing.
What you will do:
Performs stick welding on steel natural gas lines, includingdownhill welds using 6010 and 7010 welding rods and uphill weldsusing 7018 hot rods. Performs various construction and maintenance activities themajority of the time. Installs pressure control fittings. Completes steel main tie-ins, installing steel services andrepair fittings. Installs stations, farm taps and meter sets. Performs natural gas leak investigation and detection and allinstallation and repair procedures of damaged service lines andplastic mains. Sets up common Department of Transportation approvedworksites. Pinpoints and grade leaks on the natural gas distributionsystem. Calibrates instruments. Uses self-contained breathing apparatus equipment (whenneeded). Completes a variety of paperwork in writing and electronic workqueues. Safely drives a company vehicle. Operator Qualifications involve written guidelines andrequirements natural gas employees must follow to ensure the safeand responsible operation of natural gas pipelines. Required,annual Operator Qualification testing involves both written andhands-on components to ensure those who perform covered,safety-sensitive tasks on the natural gas system are trained,knowledgeable, and qualified. This position reports to the Company’s Chapel Hill OperationsCenter located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This position has two levels (Welder-Trainee and Welder A) whichallows for progression over time.
Who You Are:
0 – 12 months construction/utility experience. Experience with common hand and power tools. Ability to calibrate instruments and use self-containedbreathing apparatus and pipe squeeze-off equipment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positivecustomer and contractor interactions is critical. Basic computer and internet navigation skills are key. Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive drivingprocedures. Ability to work independently and as a team member within adiverse team. Availability for overtime, as needed. Availability for natural gas emergency response during theworkday, as well as in the evenings and some weekends, whenon-call. Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency responsetime from the geographical center of the Chapel Hill area.
Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company andcandidates are required to consistently meet this requirement,including when on-call. Occasional heavy lifting up to 80 lbs. independently.
Preferred:
6 – 12 months of construction/utility experience. 6 months welding experience. Related welding experience and knowledge highlypreferred. Good mechanical aptitude. General knowledge of pressure control and tapping/stoppingprocedures. Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.
Education Requirements:
Required High School or equivalent (i.e., GED.
Licenses:
Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving history. A valid Commercial Driver’s License is strongly preferredORtheability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months ofemployment is preferred.
Other Working Conditions:
Position works within a crew structure and/or as a floatingwelder. Welding duties are performed while utilizing the appropriatepersonal protective equipment. Work is performed primarily outside in varying weatherconditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.) Position requires continuous travel throughout the serviceterritory with frequent stops, entering/exiting the companyvehicle, safely parking in a wide variety of situations, anddriving in construction zones. Position may encounter agitated/irate customers. Physical Requirements include but are not limited to: Balancing, bending and stooping, climbing, crawling, carrying (upto 80 pounds), grasping, kneeling, lifting (up to 80 pounds),pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder,repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual requirement(able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print),hearing requirement. Mental Requirements (Both field & office) include but are notlimited to: Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or writteninstructions or other information, understand complex problems andcollaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts andideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize workschedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderateimpact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside thisarea, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines,complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda andbasic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
