The City of Sparta is seeking a motivated and dependable individual to join our Utilities Department as a Natural Gas Operator Trainee . This entry-level position is ideal for someone looking to start a career in the natural gas utility industry. Under the supervision of certified gas operators, the trainee will receive hands-on training in the maintenance, installation, inspection, and repair of natural gas infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable service to the community.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in locating, inspecting, and maintaining gas lines, valves, meters, and regulators. Learn and follow safety protocols for gas operations in accordance with federal and state regulations. Assist in leak surveys, line patrols, pressure testing, and emergency response. Operate equipment such as tapping machines, line locators, and excavation tools under supervision. Perform basic recordkeeping and documentation of field activities. Ability to follow directions, learn technical procedures, and perform physical labor Support crew in restoration of excavation sites including backfilling and surface repair. Participate in on-call rotation after initial training period. Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to work in outdoor environments and adverse conditions All other duties as assigned.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Basic knowledge of natural gas systems or pipeline safety Prior experience in utility, construction, or mechanical work CPR/First Aid or confined space training

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, including in wet, hot, cold, or hazardous environments. Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or elevated areas as needed. Outdoor work in wooded, wet, or uneven terrain with potential wildlife encounters. Use of PPE including gloves, respirators, and protective clothing as required.

Qualifications:

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it as a condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements:

Must be available to respond to emergencies during off-hours as needed. Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
