The Service Department is responsible for servicing and installingvarious natural gas appliances (residential and commercial),setting and maintaining residential and light commercial meters,restoring gas service to customers, and responding to after-hoursand emergency calls. We are looking for Trainee-Service to join our team!

This role is considered safety sensitive, and assuch, you may be required to undergo various background screenings.

This may include but is not limited to a driving record abstract,criminal check, a company sponsored medical and drug testing. This position reports to our Chapel Hill Operations Center inChapel Hill, North Carolina.

What You Will Do:

Assist in the installation of natural gas appliances, meters, andfacilities in an efficient and safe manner while achievingexcellent customer service. Use Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to distribute and route workorders to computers mounted in company vehicles. Light gas pilots on natural gas residential and/or commercialappliances. Complete minor appliance repairs. Run customer fuel lines. Complete appropriate paperwork in writing and on the computer. Safely drive a company vehicle. Operator Qualifications involve written guidelines and requirementsnatural gas employees must follow to ensure the safe andresponsible operation of natural gas pipelines. Required, annualOperator Qualification testing involves both written and hands-oncomponents to ensure those who perform covered, safety-sensitivetasks on the natural gas system are trained, knowledgeable, andqualified.

Who You Are:

Trainee-Service (0 – 6 months experience) Completed high school or equivalent (i.e. GED) Possess a valid driver’s license with a safe drivinghistory. Ability to understand and follow safety and environmentalpolicies, procedures, and protocols. Must have knowledge and skills with common hand and powertools. Effective communication skills for positive customerinteractions are critical. Ability to work in enclosed areas such as crawl spaces,basements, and attics. Ability to work on elevated areas such as roofs and utilizeladders, scaffolding and lifts. Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive drivingprocedures. Willingness to work as a team member within a diverseteam. Basic computer and internet navigation skills. Ability to serve as a natural gas emergency responder. Availability for overtime and after-hours, on-call work(including weekends and holidays, if needed). Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency responsetime from the geographical center of the Chapel Hill area.

Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company andcandidates are required to consistently meet this requirement,including when on-call.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

A demonstrated knowledge of safety procedures. A good mechanical aptitude. A demonstrated ability to use and comprehend mathematicalcalculations and formulas. Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in customer’s premise, as well as, outside invarying weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.) Position works around fumes, energized wires, dust/grease/oil, andin confined spaces. Position works in enclosed areas such as crawl spaces, basements,and attics, as well as, elevated areas such as roofs and utilizeladders, scaffolding and lifts. Position may encounter agitated/upset customers. Physical Requirements (Include but are not limited to): Balancing, bending and stooping, climbing, crawling, carrying (upto 80 amount of pounds), grasping, kneeling, lifting (objects 80pounds), pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder,repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual requirement(able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print),hearing requirement, grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting(objects up to 80 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitivemotion, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens,detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement. Mental Requirements (Both field & office) include but are notlimited to: Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or writteninstructions or other information, understand complex problems andcollaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts andideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize workschedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderateimpact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside thisarea, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines,complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda andbasic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
