The Plumber performs journey-level tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems.

Key duties include:

Repairing and maintaining water mains, sewer lines, and steam systems Servicing pumps, heat exchangers, water heaters, and condensate units Performing pipefitting, welding, or steam equipment repairs as needed Working across a range of plumbing systems in commercial settings This position supports safe, efficient building operations through skilled plumbing and system maintenance. This position is expected to fulfill on-call assignments and is considered an essential/mandatory employee during times of adverse weather. Must have a valid North Carolina Driver License. The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This position is part of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Property and Construction, Facility Maintenance team responsible for maintaining the North Carolina State Laboratory and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (SL/OCME) facility located on District Drive in Raleigh, NC. The SL/OCME facility is 261,000 SF state-of-the-art facility with highly technical and complex building systems. This position will require strong technical experience, knowledge, and skills and the ability to function as a technical expert including evaluating and making final decisions regarding maintaining highly complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, fire suppression, and security building systems.

The Division of Property and Construction:

The Division of Property and Construction supports the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services by managing its statewide facilities portfolio, which includes 18 state-operated campuses totaling over 7.7 million square feet and 148 leased properties covering approximately 1.2 million square feet. The division provides maintenance, housekeeping, and grounds services for the Dorothea Dix Campus and basic maintenance and grounds support for the Governor Morehead School. It also oversees the Department’s Capital Improvement Program, managing repair and renovation efforts as well as new capital projects from planning through close-out.

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following: Working knowledge of utility piping systems and plumbing trade practices. Working knowledge of North Carolina Building Code requirements for plumbing systems. Experienced in reading construction drawings and technical specifications. Experienced in using plumbing trade tools and equipment. Working knowledge of plumbing safety standards and experienced in working in confined spaces.

Management Preferences:

Management prefers a candidate with at least 3 years of progressive experience in commercial plumbing. Experience with pump repair and maintenance, steam repair and/or pipefitting experience.
